A UI Freestyle From RockMelt

June 21, 2011 – 5:33 pm
Abdul Fattah Ismail

I noticed the article in my headlines from Netted, a digital media treasure chest of content which I discovered during Internet Week. Intrigued, I took the browser for a spin.  I am liking the drive thus far. I’m talking about the browser coming from the developers of RockMelt.  RockMelt is a browser that smoothly integrates the UI experience on many levels. The interface can be navigated with simple drags across to your Application Feed, where you can upload your social media accounts. This panel, known as the Feed Edge, updates your content stream similar to an RSS aggregator. One swipe and click leads you into a new tab for page views. The browser application is available for PC or Mac, completing a Beta 3 relaunch today. Users may be reminded of Google Chrome and Firefox in their navigation, but this one is much more streamlined.

It’s link shortener is better than Bre.ad as well, who now has my scorn for poor account integration.  I’ve had trouble loggin in using a Facebook account and using my email account. Their smart brand strategy is being wasted right now. Hopefully they can make adjustments.

My one caveat with RockMelt is the close integration with Facebook could annoy users who use other content distributors.  The Developers vouch for Facebook because of its endless personal data reservoir. Fair enough.  I also thought the search query box was a little cumbersome as you have to open a new tab to enter Google and see content clearly.

Those quibbles aside, RockMelt is a social media browser perfect for those who push endless content around the web.  Click on the image for a download and test drive. Over here, CEO Eric Vishria talks with Bloomberg Radio about the experience.

Google Speeds Up The Web

June 17, 2011 – 12:04 pm
Abdul Fattah Ismail

In this video above, a Google programmer discusses the enhancements in language to their search algorithm, which speeds up the search query to handle the rise of mobile data transfers. The UI now also includes the ability to search by image pulled from your files or pages. Ad Age also notes of another innovation named Google Instant for Pages. The search giant will pre-load the predicted page in user results based on prior queries, saving approximately 10 seconds. More so than classified advertising, this new technology will drive up the value of banner advertising, as the number of impressions will rise for a user. Unfortunately, the test can only happen on the Chrome server. Holders of that portal should pass along feedback. Here’s another video.

Such an increased speed of a visual search algorithm foreshadows some developments for the future of the query experience. A future where SEO could be rendered obsolete. It should also prove advantageous for producers of video content, as load times will decrease with processor improvement. I also think that access to a wider range of personalized video content will improve, and do not be surprised if Netflix applies these tools to its query dashboard.

Engagement Is Not Financial Measurement

June 16, 2011 – 4:18 pm
Abdul Fattah Ismail

In a traditional dictionary, one can look up the word engagement. They will find six interpretations of the noun. By reducing the root word to engage, one will find eleven interpretations of the verb. You will understand why I diagrammed this word in a minute.

Engagement has been thrown into marketing strategy on many levels, particularly with social media. Writers across the blogosphere consider engagement a critical part of the brand development, which correlates with production. By definition, the term engagement is subjective. Vague is probably a more acute description, especially with marketers trying to scale KPI (key performance indicator) for CRM initiatives.

This writer from ClickZ talks here about social media’s impact as a brand. More importantly, he reiterates how social media truly connected to ROI, and that is through customer service. He goes on to mention that the relationship between “fans” and “likes” must be fleshed into a strategic map where responses can be fragmented for financial sectors of your business where social media is an agent of data transfer.  Some examples he lists to define revenue include subscription renewals, product up-sells, and customer saves. Thoughts on calculating ROI?

Ad Click Of The Day: Sony Bounces Balls In Wimbledon

June 15, 2011 – 4:14 pm
Abdul Fattah Ismail

The Wimbledon championships begin on Monday. Crayon, a London integrated ad agency, is pulling out an old campaign trick for new viewers.  Fallon created the memorable advertising spot with bouncing color balls in San Francisco back in 2005 for the release of Sony’s Bravia line.  Sony UK will be rolling out a 3D TV presentation during the competition’s last week.  The electronics giant is looking to promote 3D technology in England, and will attach social media widgets for users to comment on the action in real-time.  The 3D content will also be live streamed in cinemas for patrons without a 3D television along through the BBC network.  Matt Coombe, general manager of brand marketing at Sony, states the cross-reference which is clear from the start. “This project is based around a great creative idea that not only cleverly maximizes nostalgia around a previous Sony campaign, but explodes the idea digitally without having to support it on TV.”

WorldTime Buddy Traces the Global Zone

Our world is already synchronized by the financial marketplace.  Our communication technology is synched in place too. What about your organizational abilities? Do you have clientele or friends who you communicate with through Skype on a regular scale? If you are someone with this lifestyle and need to manage interdependent content, then I recommend this website domain named WorldTime Buddy.

The website design is spartan but wholly interactive.  You only need to swing the wiry mantle left and right with your mouse for alignment of disparate time zones.  First, you must type in your preferred cities which generate instantly through the search query box. The list then stacks up on the interface to a maximum of ten entries.

For business users, the timezone converter has a content menu consisting of Google Applications to email and share information on meeting details. This API may throw some people off for its hokey mantle swing, but the sharing menu does have viable utility. Click on the image to navigate the UI and leave comments here.

Toasted Bre.ad For Twitter’s Ad Diet

June 14, 2011 – 4:39 pm
Abdul Fattah Ismail

Bre.ad finally popped out of the toaster today, and I’m excitied about the branding potential in tandem with a social media layer.  I had been directed to the service a few weeks back through my Twitter timeline. The site was still in beta standing, so I had to sit around.  The twitter vine told me that it was launched, but I never got an email from the site. Anyhoo. Nothing stays hidden in the blogosphere.

I’ve noticed that web domains have begun to create their own unique link shortened URL taglines. I vacillate between bit.ly and tinyurl.com normally. David Teicher talks a little about the vision behind Bre.ad and its potential as an online advertiser with Ad Age.  He notes that Twitter continues to have trouble scaling the value of their content.  If Bre.ad becomes successful, then revenue baking is just the start of digital content’s glorious scent. The video below will show how to share your content online and spread the butter.

Business Principles From The Dalai Lama

June 6, 2011 – 4:51 pm
Abdul Fattah Ismail

Few people in our modern society correlate The Dalai Lama with business.  It is easy to marginalize his propechy as nominal tenets of Buddhism and social justice for Tibet.  But many with greater insight know that his influence stretches far beyond these themes. It applies to marketing as well.  The American Express OPEN Forum recently collected some of his thoughts on how he maintains an enterprise which involves travel, speaking engagements, merchandise, and polity discussion.  Here is the list.

1.  Have A Team In Place

The Dalai Lama is 76 years old and has a demanding travel schedule.  He’d laugh at the itinerary of professional sports teams.  HIs team of translators, publicists, and strategists help to keep logistics running smoothly.  All sound business operations know that it takes a band of brothers to generate revenue and maintain success.

2.  Maintain Focus

The Dalai Lama focuses on three core principles in all of his public engagements.  He aims to: promote human ethics, religious harmony, and be an ambassador for the culture of Tibet.  When people inquire with him, he makes sure to reference these three themes to keep an even keel.

3.  Find The Funny (description from source)

The Dalai Lama deals with serious stuff. (This was an Amnesty International event featuring discussions of political prisoners and torture.) Nonetheless, he has quite a sense of humor. He donned a tennis visor. He giggled when an audience member asked an excruciatingly long question. The laughter helped everyone relax and illustrated that nothing’s quite as serious as we think. Try it the next time your staff is going nuts, your printer just blew a gasket and you need to defuse some tension in your workplace.

4.  Slow Down

I feel that in our hyperactive society, this is becoming more and more of a lost art.  The Dalai Lama, in this conference, took time to truly engage with everyone who was on stage with him. The person’s stature made little difference in his conduct. He spoke with, smiled at and looked into the eyes of each person. What would happen in our business lives if we all took the time to do the same?

If you are in New York, take the time to attend Yahoo’s Internet Week Conference and practice these fundamentals.  Click on the Dalai’s image for more information.

Chrome Gains Luster; 1 Out of 8 Internet Users Emerge

June 2, 2011 – 4:12 pm
Abdul Fattah Ismail

According to CNET, Google Chrome is gaining traction as a browsing application in cyberspace.  In May, usage rose slightly from 11.9% to 12.5%, according to Net Applications.  With a wide palette of social media tools, Google has campaigned heavily online through YouTube video clips, display advertising, and event sponsorship.

The search giant sees Chrome with the potential to sync loads of content between the desktop and mobile user experience.  The code base for Android mobile software differs, but that is not a hindrance to development.  As more content travels, then the opportunities to generate revenue from SEO will increase. Display advertising also will pick up steam as they are included with video content.  Chrome developers have left the architecture open to allow rival browsers like Firefox and Opera on their mobile platform.

As noticed with Twitter, such a democratic ecosystem can lead to roadblocks as the technology improves with research.  In this particular sector, Internet Explorer 6 remains the dominant browser on personal computers. IE6 has not been able to keep up with the explosion of mobile applications using current HTML5 language.  Therefore, the strategy is smart for the moment.  Word has filtered around that Google is developing a menu of hardware which will carry Chrome as the main browser. Until that point, the desktop browser seems largely tied to consumer knowledge of new software development. The bet is fickle, but must be monitored in order to see a market shift. Those interested in trying Chrome should click on the logo above.

QR Code Marketing and Advertising Tips, Ideas, and Strategies for Internet Marketing

June 2, 2011 – 1:37 pm
Asif Anwar

There are very few things that connect the real world with the digital world and QR Codes are one of them. There are several QR Codes scanners available for your mobile phones and handheld devices that will help you to generate a certain call-to-action. Previously, you had to wait for print media to generate traffic for your site. However, with QR codes, this can stimulate quick responses from your potential customers. Again, the use of QR codes are not limited to print media as it has several other uses.

What are QR Codes and What Can you do with it?

QR Codes, or Quick Response Codes are 2D barcodes. The traditional barcodes you see with zebra stripes are really 1D barcodes. The name Quick Response itself tells you that they are used for generating quick responses for various devices, including mobile devices and smartphones. The pixilated square barcode is capable of generating various functions, that are defined by the mobile devices. Some of the things you can do are:

  • Send an event invitation with the ability to save ICS event file in your mobile phone
  • Send contact information to save them on your mobile phone
  • Use mailto: tags to send email immediately
  • Send information about a specific location or any maps app your phone uses
  • Allow people to call a number in a snap, instead of having them to type in your long digit numbers
  • Automatically generate an SMS message/template to be sent to another mobile device
  • Show specific text, hidden text, or coupon codes in your mobile

You can find them by googling “QR code generator”.  To make the QR Code marketing to work for you, your business, and your site, you need to get some things working properly to get the most out of it.

  • Make sure you have valid contact mechanisms
  • Make sure your QR code is not too complex and contains too much information.  If your code is complex it will generate comparatively smaller pixels and many QR scanners on lower quality smartphone may not be able to read it properly
  • If you are using coupon codes, make sure they are properly working
  • If you are pushing the QR scanner to a specific URL, make sure the URL is properly working
  • Prepare a proper URL from Google URL Builder to make scanning activity trackable in Google Analytics. This usually adds an extra tracking parameter at the end of your URL immediately followed by question mark (“?”). So, your URL can contain parameters like: campaign source, campaign medium, campaign term, campaign content, campaign name or any other custom parameter
  • If you are using the Google URL builder, also make sure you have canonical meta in place for the site. This will help your site to fight duplicate content problems

Aside from print, QR Codes work with digital screens, be it small or as large as a billboard.  You can help your visitors to transfer content to their mobile phones or other handheld devices from any other devices. You can help them land on the same URL through the page they see on Desktop/Laptop screen. If you have a recipe site, it’ll be very convenient for your visitors to transfer your visitors to the same page in mobile, because it’s very convenient to move around with your mobile instead of laptop.
