It finally happened. In February, Facebook became the most popular site in the US, edging out Google for the coveted #1 position. Hitwise reports that Facebook received 7.07% of all US web traffic, while Google received 7.03%.

Digital Beat goes into further detail about the news and suggests that Farmville and other social games account for this dramatic rise in traffic. If this is truly the cause of Facebook’s recent traffic spike, we will see Facebook working even harder to promote social gaming through their site.
It remains to be seen, though, if Facebook can maintain this growth and keep their position as the top US site. To do so, they will need to continue partnering with other companies to bring new games and other interesting applications to the site, because eventually people will tire of Farmville and Mafia Wars and will be ready for something new.
