Tomorrow, is the start of the EcomXpo.  This is a virtual online trade show that takes place every six months.  Maybe your feet are weary from attending too many trade shows where you walk a concrete conference room floor for hours going booth to booth to booth picking up a bunch of junk and trinkets your kids don’t even want only to speak with actors or models that don’t know the first thing about the company they’re representing.

The e-commerce Expo is all online, and is set up like a trade show!

ecomexpo You do not have to walk anywhere nor do you have to leave the comfort of your office or home.  The trade show runs 24 hours a day for two days.  You can visit a number of boots and talk to people actually know what’s going on with the company via chat or e-mail.  If they’re busy talking to someone else, you can leave a quick message and establish a rendezvous to talk with them later when they are available.  That sure beats standing around on a hard concrete conference floor waiting your turn to talk to somebody!

There are no silly trinkets but they do offer a few prizes at some of the booths.  Free trips and Apple iPods are the preferred prize of choice by most exhibitors.  The virtual format actually does work very well and it can be a relief for those weary of attending too many conferences.

Tech Savvy Fit Right in at the Virtual Trade Show

Since the target audience for the trade show are typically e-commerce minded folks, many people are right at home in the virtual environment.  If you are not terribly tech savvy, it’s still not very difficult to navigate the trade show as the layout is designed just like a trade show.  You can pan around and click on a booth to visit the booth.

Tip from An Old Timer at this Show

For all of the tech savviness that goes into this trade show, the show can best be viewed through Microsoft Internet Explorer.  Something about the site doesn’t work terribly well with FireFox which is one of the few distracting comments I have about the show.

The Run Down

This show has hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of exhibitors.  The show focuses on all types of commerce online from internet sales, to social media marketing to affiliate marketing, SEO and much much more.

This year as in October they will also feature their first Virtual job fair. They have a number of keynote speakers and group sessions through their University system and for $50-$100 you can get access to all of the keynotes and sessions for later review.

But best of all for people that are looking to attend, browse, or network, the EcomXpo is completely free!

  2. This is an interesting format. You are right due to time constraints it is hard to attend all the trade shows, conferences and meeting that are happening around the world in my industry.

I would like to point out that there are a number of advantages of attending a live event which far outweigh the time saving element of a web event.

Some of these are obvious and they are as follows:

•At a live event I not only get to interact with the vendors or presenters but thousand of other business prospects. So when I am standing in line to talk a company representative I use that opportunity to interact with the person in front me and behind me in the line. It is an ideal opportunity to introduce my business and do my pitch. These are captive audience. Since they cannot leave the line and lose their spot, they are kind of forced to give me their attention.

•A live event allows me to feel, touch, taste and experiences a product in a way that is not possible online. In some industries this is very important.

•A live event also presents many other opportunities to network and make important deals such as the cocktail parties thrown by the different vendors after the main event or a round of golf or tennis with a business prospect.

A live event gives an opportunity to see and be seen which cannot be replicated in a web event. I acknowledge that due to time constraints and cost constraints web events are becoming popular for certain niche and support services industries. However, for a major Fortune 500 brand nothing beats the thrill, exhilaration, experience and business opportunities of attending or presenting at a live event.

    Let me know your thoughts.
